- Check for curling, loose, or missing shingles.
- Check for signs of water intrusion:
- Wet areas on the ceiling.
- Sagging areas on the roof.
- Check for any debris collecting on the roof, or tree branches that could fall and damage your home.
- Debris on the roof does not allow water to flow freely and causes a ponding effect, which will drive water under your shingles.
- Make sure the wind did not blow off your chimney cap or HVAC cap, and make sure they are aligned properly.
- Check for loose, missing, or cracked pieces of siding and trim. This could be a sign of old siding or weather damage.
- Check for signs of water intrusion by searching for signs of rotten wood that needs to be replaced around your windows, doors, soffit, and fascia.
- Remember: if you see bad wood, it is a symptom of the problem and not the cause! Rotten wood indicates a larger problem, that needs to be addressed ASAP!
- Check your caulk joints! Caulk joints are where siding meets brick, or at the sides of windows and doors. If it is cracked or missing, then it is a sign of water intrusion.
- Check if your windows and doors are sealed properly, and your sashes open properly.
- See if you feel a draft coming from the window or door when it is shut.
- Ensure there are no cracks in the glass that could be letting air in.

- If you like to air your house out in the spring, now is the time to check your screens.

- If you have a newer roof (less than 5 years old), it is normal to have some granules!
- If your roof is older, excessive amounts of grit indicates that your roof is losing its protection from UV rays and weather.
- During those April showers, take a note if your gutters are overflowing during rainy weather.
- Check to see if water is flowing through the downspouts, if you don’t see a stream equivalent to rainfall, then your gutters may be clogged and need to be cleaned.
- If the problem persists after cleaning, you may need to size up your gutters, or improve flow distribution by adding downspouts.
