  • Check for curling, loose, or missing shingles.
  • Check for signs of water intrusion:
    • Wet areas on the ceiling.
    • Sagging areas on the roof.
  • Check for any debris collecting on the roof, or tree branches that could fall and damage your home.
    • Debris on the roof does not allow water to flow freely and causes a ponding effect, which will drive water under your shingles.
  • Make sure the wind did not blow off your chimney cap or HVAC cap, and make sure they are aligned properly.
  • Check for loose, missing, or cracked pieces of siding and trim. This could be a sign of old siding or weather damage.
  • Check for signs of water intrusion by searching for signs of rotten wood that needs to be replaced around your windows, doors, soffit, and fascia.
    • Remember: if you see bad wood, it is a symptom of the problem and not the cause! Rotten wood indicates a larger problem, that needs to be addressed ASAP!
  • Check your caulk joints! Caulk joints are where siding meets brick, or at the sides of windows and doors. If it is cracked or missing, then it is a sign of water intrusion.
  • Check if your windows and doors are sealed properly, and your sashes open properly.
    • See if you feel a draft coming from the window or door when it is shut.
    • Ensure there are no cracks in the glass that could be letting air in.
      • If you find cracks, we recommend calling American Glass in Annapolis.
  • If you like to air your house out in the spring, now is the time to check your screens.
      • Ensure the screens are in place and secure, with no tears or rips.
        • If you screens need to be repaired, your local hardware store such as Ace Hardware or TrueValue are great resources!
  • Check for excessive shingle grit in your gutters or ask your gutter cleaner to check for you.
    • If you have a newer roof (less than 5 years old), it is normal to have some granules!
    • If your roof is older, excessive amounts of grit indicates that your roof is losing its protection from UV rays and weather.
  • During those April showers, take a note if your gutters are overflowing during rainy weather.
    • Check to see if water is flowing through the downspouts, if you don’t see a stream equivalent to rainfall, then your gutters may be clogged and need to be cleaned.
      • If the problem persists after cleaning, you may need to size up your gutters, or improve flow distribution by adding downspouts.
    • If you would like to reduce the maintenance of your gutters and help prevent debris build up, we can install PlyGem Leaf Relief gutter covers.
  • Make sure your gutters are properly secured to the fascia. Gutters are not properly secured when they:
    • Appear to be pulling away from the house.
    • Appear to be sagging or dipping.
