R-value is the rating used to measure how well insulation resists heat and ranges from R-1 up to R-60+, depending on the insulation type and where it’s installed. The higher the R-value, the better it keeps warm air in during winter and hot air out during summer. Attics require higher R-values, R-49 and up, because they lose the most heat, while walls and floors need moderate levels.

Upgrade Your Home’s Efficiency with Expert Insulation Services

Insulation plays a critical role in your home’s comfort, energy efficiency, and overall performance. Depending on where insulation is installed and how it’s used, different materials serve different purposes. Below are three of the most common insulation solutions we install, each designed to address specific areas of the home and deliver targeted performance benefits.

Blown In Insulation

Blown-in insulation is one of the best ways to invest in your home. It fills attic and wall spaces with dense material that improves comfort and reduces utility bills. It provides thick, even coverage at an affordable price, making it one of the most effective ways to boost your home’s energy efficiency. While spray foam focuses on air sealing, blown-in insulation delivers excellent performance for the cost and is the ideal solution for improving comfort throughout your entire home.

Rigid Foam Board Insulation

Rigid foam board insulation is the most common insulation used in flat roofing systems. While most homeowners only ever see insulation in an attic cavity, rigid foam boards are installed within the roofing system itself to provide thermal protection. Lightweight yet highly effective, this material delivers excellent R-value and is the number one flat roofing insulation in the U.S. Rigid foam boards can be used to create slopes on flat roofing, improving overall roof performance.

Insulation for Siding

Fanfold siding insulation is a lightweight panel designed to go beneath your home’s siding. It provides an extra layer of protection, acting as a thermal break and helping reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. Fanfold must be layered with a quality house wrap overtop such as Tyvek or Hardie Wrap in order to be fully effective.

Roof Insulation FAQs

Answers to frequently asked questions about roof insulation.

How do you know you need insulation?

As energy costs have risen over the last 30 years, the amount of insulation needed for modern codes went from R-20 to R-49 or above, so if your current insulation is older than 25-30 years, you are due for a replacement. The “R-value” measures how well insulation resists heat flow – the higher the number, the better it keeps warm air in during winter and hot air out during summer. So when you see R-49, it means the insulation is thick and efficient enough to offer a high level of energy savings and temperature control, especially in attics.

How Much Attic Insulation Do I Need?

The amount of attic insulation you need varies depending on where your home is located and how much existing insulation you have in the attic. In the Mid-Atlantic region, most homes need R-38 to R-60. A Fichtner Services representative will inspect your attic to determine your current level and recommend the amount of insulation that is right for your home.

What is R-value?

The performance of insulation is measured by R-value, or its ability to resist heat flow. Higher R-values mean more insulating power. Air sealing is important for optimal performance of insulation, which works best when air is not moving through or around it.
