Strip shingles, also called 3 Tab Roof Shingles, were at one time, the most widely used shingle on the market. However, due to lack of strength, thickness, and poor design, these shingles have been on the decline. Three tab shingles have actually become more expensive than higher quality architectural grade shingles. This shingle roofing system is made from a basic 3’ by 1’ strip of asphalt embedded in fiberglass mat which is then covered in stone granules. The three foot strip then has two thin strips stamped out of it every foot in order to make 3 – one foot tabs. This is why you made hear it referred to as a “3 tab shingle”.
Dimensional roof shingles have come a long way over the last 20 years! With double layers of strip shingles bonded on top of each other, these shingles have at the same time made a stronger, more wind resistant product, while enhancing the aesthetics of the roof. The dimensional look and feel it provides is significant. This dimensional, or architectural, shingle is also made from a 3’x1’ strip but it is then laminated with additional layers that gives it a deeper, more defined look. The manufacturers have also developed a “shadowing” affect that uses darker shades of granules near the overlap which creates a look of depth in the shingle.
Designer roof shingles are usually larger, heavier and thicker. They can range from multi-laminates that simulate the look of slate to extensive cut-out patterns that resemble cedar.
