HOME OF THE MONTH

Harbor Hills | Davidsonville, Maryland

Remodeling a home that you have loved for over 40 years is no easy undertaking.  So when the owners of our featured home of the month decided to update the entire exterior, choosing the right contractor who can do the entire project was extremely important.  The exterior of your home is so critical to protecting the rest of the home from the elements, and because roofing, siding and gutter systems are all intertwined, a company that is trained and certified in the installation of each system is crucial.

Fichtner Services is a GAF Master Elite roofing contractor and a James Hardie Elite Preferred siding installer, which is rare to see in one remodeling contractor and provides top-level expertise in tying the systems together.

This well-loved home on a nice, private, wooded lot in the Harbor Hills neighborhood of Davidsonville recently received a complete exterior update.  The homeowners built their house in 1976 and raised their family here.  Their children have since grown up and moved out on their own, and they have watched the neighborhood houses turn over to younger families.

As you can imagine, these homes have been getting updated one by one.  Because they love the neighborhood so much, our customer decided that they want to stay in the home as long as they are able.  At first, they were considering adding a dormer to the front elevation of the home, but Tom Fichtner, owner of Fichtner Services, and Nolan Redd, our Remodeling Production Manager, instead proposed a covered portico with a metal roof to dress up the front with a warm and inviting feel…

Our carpentry crew built a mock-up on the front of the house so that they could envision what it would look like and the homeowners loved the idea.  From there, we built the new porch, added new overhangs on the edges of the roof, to give the house some depth, and replaced the shingles with GAF Timberline in Charcoal color.  On the portico, we installed a Dark Bronze standing seam metal roof to add architectural interest.

Next, we replaced the siding with James Hardie fiber cement in Gray Slate color, and all the trim was replaced with Hardie trim in a crisp, clean bright white.  Three styles of Hardie were used on the project: HardiePlank on most of the home, HardieShingles in the 2 front gables and Board and Batten in the side alcove.  These features have given the house a nice craftsman style feel. Lastly, we replaced the front and side doors and installed new white aluminum gutters to the home.

The end result is a dramatic change and looks amazing. The homeowners now have an extremely low-maintenance exterior and won’t have to worry about the upkeep as they age in place. They love the finished product and said, “Very pleased with the final product. Great service, quality workmanship, excellent products, & reasonably priced. All in all, a very pleasant experience!” We are happy that we could help them with this project and really enjoy seeing our customers so pleased!

NATIONAL UMBRELLA MONTH

In preparation for the upcoming rainy month of April, March was declared national umbrella month as a way to remind people to get their umbrellas ready for Spring.  Umbrellas are often used as a symbol of protection from the elements.  Although Fichtner Services has proudly used an umbrella in its logo for 25 years as a way to demonstrate its capacity for protection, the umbrella also symbolizes its wide range of home exterior services.  Fichter Services not only offers roof repair services, but provides full home exterior contracting services under its umbrella of service and repair options.

Get ready for Spring with our

Spring Home Checklist!

Now that spring is finally arriving, it’s time to get outside and see what Old Man Winter has done to your home. Wind, snow, ice and the freeze-thaw cycle can take their toll on your home’s protective shell. Assessments should also be done after major storms.

ROOF:

  • Are there curling, missing or broken shingles?
  • Is there loose material at chimneys, pipes and other roof penetrations?
  • Is there shingle grain in gutters? This gives added weight and protection from the UV rays.
  • Are there wet areas on the inside of your home indicating roof or siding leaks?…

REFERRAL PROGRAM WINNER

February 2019

Our referral winner for February was Matthew Ballantine of Lothian! The Ballantines hired Fichtner Services to replace their roof and gutters, and have since recommended our services to several of their friends. Here is what Matthew had to say:

“We got quotes from 4 other companies. Fichtner came up when talking about our project with a family member that said a home inspector they used told them that Fichtner was a good local roofing company that he hadn’t seen any issues with when inspecting roofs for home inspections. We included Fichtner and got a quote (company 5). Fichtner was right in the middle as far as costs and had good reviews on a bunch of different websites. They also didn’t come off as used car salesmen like most other companies that quoted (“what do I have to do to get you to sign a contract tonight…?” – literally, I heard this more than once). Bottom-line,- I chose Fichtner because they were highly rated and cost was generally comparable with where a couple other quotes were coming in.

Sales (Shane) was very good at communicating options, schedule was set and met with no issues, and the end result was a nice looking roof with no leaks or issues noted thus far

I recommended to a few folks to get a quote from Fichtner because the end result of the project was a nice looking roof, no issues with expanding the scope and change orders, and a cost estimate generally in line with other, lower rated contractors. They did what they said they would do and were in and out in no time.”
